Ever wonder what superheroes do when they’re not donning capes and saving the world? They’re probably working as care workers, blending into the daily grind with their superpowers of patience, empathy, and the magical ability to make a mean cup of tea, and offer a choice of biscuits. A care worker’s day can start at the crack of dawn, or sometimes even before that, because who needs sleep when you have lives to brighten? They zip from home to home, faster than a speeding mobility scooter, armed with a virtual bag full of essential skills â †from medication awareness to the all-important ability to make a mean breakfast of scrambled egg on toast, let the cat out, help with showers and getting dressed for the day, or chat about the football results while plumping the pillows of their grateful clients.
A care workers’ trusty steed isn’t a noble stallion but a reliable hatchback, filled with the soothing sounds of the ’80s classics or the latest self-help audiobook. They’re greeted by smiles, stories of the ’good old days’, and the occasional grumpy cat who seems to question their life choices. Clients come in all shapes and sizes as do our amazing care workers in all Sussex areas; each visit is a new adventure; they might be a chef one minute, whipping up a culinary delight that would make Gordon Ramsay proud, and a tech wizard the next, tackling the Everest of challenges: the TV remote - whether its got stuck down the side of the sofa or simply needs a battery change, our care workers are up to the task of sorting out the kind of domestic issues that people tend to get mixed up in, if their mobility or cognitive skills require a little help. Filling up that bird table outside the window so that someone can enjoy the view of their avian visitors, when you’ve gone, checking someone’s cupboards to make sure they have enough food, or shopping trips or social visits out for a coffee are what people need to keep their spirits high - and our trusty care workers are there to make sure that life is good.
Lunchtime calls are a whirlwind of sandwiches, preparing salads, heating up and serving microwave meals safely, laughter, and help with the daily crossword, which is often more cryptic than any ancient riddle. Some of our clients are pretty hard core at crosswords, Scrabble or a game of cards! Afternoons are for walks in the park, or a push in a wheelchair for some of our clients who struggle to get out, where they’re not just care workers but also duck feeders, ice cream connoisseurs, and squirrel spotters! Joking apart, our job as a care worker is to make people laugh and smile just as much as keeping them clean and healthy. And as the morning or day shift worker heads home evening shift care worker is on the road, making sure that their clients are given their evening meal, and popped into bed, complete with bed time drinks and a last cheery ’good night!’ as you make sure their door is secure on your way out.
As the day ends, its time to soak in the bath, reflecting on the day’s victories and the little moments that make it all worthwhile. Care workers return home, hang up their superhero cloak (also known as a waterproof jacket), and finally put their feet up, knowing that they’ve made a real difference and brought joy to someone’s shut-in existence. As much as people like living at home, with a lifetime of possessions around them, it can be lonely and difficult as you get older, to manage. But its a great feeling for the care worker to help couples stay together at home, keeping people out of that expensive residential accommodation as long as they can manage, or if people live alone, providing that essential touch of human contact if family cannot be around, which for so many is the case. And as they drift off to sleep, care workers may dream of tomorrow’s events, because for these everyday heroes, the work never stops â †but neither does the joy, the laughter, and the satisfaction of a job well done. So here’s to the care workers, the unsung heroes who deserve all the capes and applause. And biscuits. Definitely more biscuits.
